Urbanites who are seeking to escape the congestion of Baltimore, Annapolis or Washington, DC should consider a beautiful residential area near the geographic center of Maryland. This unincorporated community located in Anne Arundel County is Gambrills, named for early plantation owner Augustus Gambrills. Gambrills is not only a suburb of Annapolis, but also a part of the Baltimore greater metropolitan area while only a ten minute commute from Fort Meade.
The original village was located two miles southeast of Odenton on Annapolis Road but today the Census-designated place (CDP) of Gambrills is to its northeast by the Patuxent Freeway. According to (can we get 2010 census data instead of 2000) census, the local population of 1,759 has grown by 37%, and today its population is 2,800. Conveniently bordered by I-97, Gambrills is also served by MARC (Maryland Commuter Rail Service) regularly both to Washington, DC and Baltimore for the convenience of commuters.
The popularity of this gorgeous neighborhood for suburban living is well-earned. Gambrills is a lovely area of rolling wooded hills and four separate seasons yearly. Families here have great neighborhood public schools that rank higher in achievement than the state average. There are also private school options available. There are seven colleges and universities within sixteen miles, including three community colleges and the University of Maryland-Baltimore. Friendly community churches in a variety of denominations, convenient local shopping centers, groceries and restaurants make this a full-service community.
Located within Gambrills is the Severn Run National Environmental Area. Listed in the Baltimore Guide Book “60 Hikes Within 60 Miles”, this area provides:
The Horizon Organic Dairy Farm is the U. S. Navy’s nearby family learning center and makes a fun outing also.
The median home cost is $343,000 in a community with crime rates significantly below the national average. Real estate offerings range from condominiums from $200,000 to $300,000 to homes ranging from the $200,000s to $1.25 million. Residents love the variety of new and established subdivisions and homes on large multi-acre lots here.
Some common home examples include modest detached homes with around 1,700 square feet in the $250,000+ price range or a spacious four-five bedroom, three bath, two story home with approx. 3,700 for around $600,000 and up. There are also historic older homes available in the area.
