  • HometownAnnapolis:February 13, 2006 Ranks of real estate agents under 30 rising By DAVID E. LEIVA Staff Writer Scott Smolen had three things going for him when he got started as a real estate agent with RE/MAX: computer knack, business acumen and a willingness to meet customers’ expectations. Problem was, he had two things going against him: age and inexperience. At 24, he wasn’t always the face of reassurance for people who were about to put the biggest asset they owned into the hands of someone 10 years younger than their own children. Yet, he persevered, and five years after he got started, Mr. Smolen of Gambrills was recognized by the National Association of Realtors as a member of the top “30 under 30,” a designation for agents nationwide who had achieved measurable success in the field. His sales in 2003 jumped to $19.4 million, up from $12 million in 2002. Last year, he cleared $41 million with the help of two buyers’ agents and assistants. “Because I’m pretty tall, people thought I was a little older,” said Mr. Smolen, now 30, who stands at 6 feet 5 inches. But he wasn’t. With the advent of the Internet and e-mail, he turned youth and tech skills into his key selling points. “There are a number of retirees that are computer savvy. They’re very good at it. It’s something they appreciate as well,” he said. Mr. Smolen is part of a new crop of agents that have sprung recently in Anne Arundel – all young, energetic and under 30. While neither the state nor county real estate association keep detailed figures, one estimate puts the membership of the county group at nearly 30 percent.”
